Mercer Wrestlers Successful at District 10 Tournament


Two members of the Mercer Wrestling Team competed in the final rounds of the District 10 Tournament on Monday, February 23rd. Preston Hoover (12th grade) placed 2nd in his weight class and Zac King (10th grade) placed 6th in his weight class. Both wrestlers will move forward into the Regional Tournament, which will take place on February 27th and 28th at Sharon High School.

Updates from the Choir Department

The Mercer Middle-High School Choir Department will be involved in the following events in the coming month:
  • Chamber Choir will be singing for the Chamber of Commerce on March 4th for their Chamber Luncheon
  • Chamber Choir will be singing at Trinity Presbyterian Church on March 15th at 11:00 a.m.
  • Concert Choir and Middle School Choir will be working with Dr. Samuel Barbara from Westminster College the week of February 23rd. He will be the clinician reinforcing solfegge and Kodaly technique while working with each group on their repertoire pieces.

Reminder...Mercer Talent Show on Friday, February 27th

The Choir Department will be hosting the 3rd Annual Talent Show on Friday, February 27th. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and the show begins at 6:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $4.00. The masters of ceremony will be Janalyn Miklas, Sarah Evans, Kendra Walker, and Sarah Miller.

Community Based Learning Program Helps with Community Easter Egg Hunt

Community Based Learning (CBL) is a program that students participate in where they do work in the community. Some of the tasks are completed outside of school, but there are some jobs that are done in the classroom. One of these classroom responsibilities is the filling of 2,000 Easter eggs for the Mercer Community Easter Egg Hunt. Students are to put one sticker, one toy, and one piece of candy in each egg. When all of the eggs are filled the students drop the eggs off at The Chapel in Mercer. This is the third year that the students have participated in this community project.

Mercer Wrestlers Compete at Section Tournament

The Mercer High School wrestlers competed at the Section Tournament at Sharon High School on Friday, February 13th and Saturday, February 14th. The following wrestlers placed at Sections, thus gaining an invitation to compete at the District 10 Tournament on Friday, February 20th and Saturday February 21st: Ben Shaffer (2nd place), Preston Hoover (2nd place), Zac King (3rd place), Rodney Brant (4th place), Bobby Gregory (4th place).


Girls' Basketball Competes in District 10 Playoffs on 2/18

The Mercer Lady M's will travel to Meadville High School to compete in the first round of the District 10 Girls' AA playoffs on Wednesday, February 18th. The Lady M's will compete against Northwestern at 8:00 p.m.




Mercer Speech Team Competes at Bethel Park Invitational

The Mercer Speech Team traveled to Bethel Park on February 13th-14th to compete in the largest and most competitive tournament in the regular season. There were over 400 student participants representing 31 schools from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. The Mercer Speech Team finished 3rd overall, out of 31 schools, in speech sweepstakes. Fifteen of Mercer's 23 speakers advanced into the speech elimination rounds. Here are the results from the 28th Annual Bethel Park Blackhawk Invitational:

Mercer Seniors Participate in Senior Exit Interviews

Senior exit interviews were conducted on Friday, February 13th. The interviews were conducted by teams of Mercer Middle-High School faculty members. The interview is the final stage of the required senior project. Mercer seniors must complete a minimum of 20 hours of community service and attend at least one government meeting.

5M Marching Band Travels to Walt Disney World

The Mercer 5M Band travels to Walt Disney World from February 15th to Thursday February 19th. On the evening of Wednesday, Monday 16th, the 5M Band will perform in a parade in the Magic Kingdom. In addition the Jazz Band will perform at 1:45 p.m. on Monday, February 16th on the Waterside Stage in Downtown Disney.

Students of the Month - February 2015

Each month there are Students of the Month that are selected that best represent positive attributes. Students are nominated by members of the faculty and reviewed by the administration. There are four distinct qualities that the faculty is looking for when nominating a student: honor, respect, excellence, and determination. The follow students were recipients of the Student of the Month Award for the month of February: Carson Bish (8th grade), Madison Kimes (8th grade), Shawn Moon (11th grade), and Virginia Reagle (8th grade). Congratulations to those students for exemplifying those special qualities.

Speech Team Competes at 3rd Annual Knoch High School Invitational

On February 7th, the Speech Team traveled to compete in the 3rd Annual Knoch High School Invitational. Mercer competed against 24 different schools and over 225 speakers. Overall, the team earned 4th place honors, but it should be noted that there were three tournament categories in which the Mercer Speech Team does not compete. Here are the results:

Speech Team Results at Pine Richland Invitational

On January 31st, the Mercer Speech Team traveled to Pine Richland High School to compete against more than 375 competitors. Here are the results:

February 6th - Senior Recognition for Boys Basketball

On Friday, February 6th, the Mercer Boys' Basketball team will play its final regular season home game against the Reynolds Raiders. Prior to the start of the game the senior members of the basketball team and cheerleading squad will be recognized. These senior athletes include: Logan Clarke, Nate Kroll, Zach Kroll, and Jonathan Scheidhauer. Also being recognized this evening are the senior members of the Varsity Girls' Cheerleading squad. The senior cheerleaders include: Makenzie Guidace, Maggie LaBarge, and Taylor Moon.

Senior Recognition for Girls' Basketball

The Mercer Girls' Basketball Team will host its final home game of the 2014-15 season at Mercer High School on Thursday, February 5th. Prior to the game the senior members of the Girls' Basketball Team will be recognized. Those seniors to be celebrated are Adelyn Cook and Katie McCann (statistician).

Students for Charity Hosts Fundraiser for the United Way

The Mercer Students for Charity organization is currently hosting a fundraising campaign that benefits the United Way of Mercer County. Students are given a "Live United" t-shirt and asked to use that as their fundraising object. For those that donate at least $1.00 to the program, they are permitted to sign the shirt. The ultimate goal for each member of the Students for Charity is to collect 100 signatures, thus earning $100.00. The campaign is behind held from January 28th to February 25th. The United Way of Mercer County is largely responsible for providing funds for programs such as: Success by Six, Children's Aid Society, Boy Scouts of America, Brandy Springs Park, and Mercer Library. If you see a member of the Students for Charity organization, please donate a dollar and sign your name for this noble cause.

Junior Class Holds Annual Doughnut Sale

The eleventh grade class is currently selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts for $7.00 per dozen. The sale will end February 5th. The purchased doughnuts will be delivered on Thursday, February 12th. See a member of the junior class to place your order.

High School Crossfire Tournament Scheduled for February 25th

The 10th Grade Class Officers will be hosting a High School Crossfire Tournament on Wednesday, February 25th at the new elementary gym. The even will last from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Teams must consist of 10 players, with an equal number of males/females. The cost per participant is $2.00.

Make-Up Day Scheduled for Monday, February 16th

As a result of the cancellation on Monday, February 2nd, the Mercer Area School District will make up the school day on Monday, February 16th.

15 Mercer Students to Participate in Ethics Symposium at Grove City College

On Wednesday, March 4th, fifteen Mercer High School juniors will travel to Grove City College to attend a one-day ethics symposium, hosted by the Rotary of Grove City. This will be the inaugural year for this event. The participants will take part in various sessions throughout the day with over 300 other local students in the surrounding area. The following Mercer High School students will be attending the 1st Annual Rotary Club of Grove City Ethics Symposium: Jordyn Buchanan, Kaitlin Conner, Alyssa English, Ryan Hamilton, Austin Hall, Emily Kirila, Megan Lang, Tim Lang, Hannah McElrath, Janalyn Miklas, David Miller, Mark Peters, Jeremiah Robertson, Jake Schmid, and Kyle Wamboldt.
